not slop.

Websites and brands for serious businesses with less serious branding: AI, security, training and fintech companies that stay warm, weird and human while still selling to people who sign contracts.

Collected as reference for a lowercase AI-enablement brand (fast · safe · young · smart). This is inspiration, not brand strategy. Every link was checked live on 21 Sep 2026.

01 · closest to home AI · safety · learning, with a personality

Same category tension as kadabra: a technical, slightly scary subject, made approachable.

granola

AI notepad that rebranded to look deliberately not like an AI company. The logo is a napkin-sketch "G", the typeface is made from a co-founder's handwriting, and the palette is earthy green on paper. It trended on X on launch day and had record downloads.

mistral

A frontier AI lab dressed in warm, retro pixel art: a block "M" in a sunset gradient and a pixel cat. It's a direct rejection of the cold, blue look of AI companies, and it still reads as "enterprise-ready".

lakera · gandalf / agent breaker

An AI security company that teaches prompt injection through a game: trick the wizard into revealing the password. This is the closest thing to "AI safety training that respects short attention spans", with the product used as the lesson. The link now redirects to Agent Breaker.

vanta

SOC 2 and compliance, about as dull a category as exists, sold with a llama (llamas are real guard animals). The type mixes a formal sans with an expressive serif, and the brand describes itself as "a trusted expert, with a wink".

hummingbird

Anti-money-laundering software in warm coral on cream, "warmth in a category built on fear". The name reframes compliance as speed + precision + lightness. That's the same move as making AI safety feel fast rather than heavy.

cleo

An AI money assistant with a sassy, Gen-Z voice, which was kept when the brand grew up for a wider audience. Worth studying for how to make copy the personality and how to mature it without sanding it down.

multiverse

An upskilling company (now selling AI adoption to enterprises) whose identity was designed to "inject personality into the samey education sector". The logo is animated and multi-state, and it sits on a proudly alternative tone.

hugging face

A serious ML infrastructure company whose logo is an emoji. It's proof that an unserious mark doesn't cap how technical the audience can be.

riot

Security awareness training built around Albert, a friendly cyber companion who teaches in chat-sized tutorials. The tagline "where companies get their teams secured" is team-level, not enterprise-level.

hoxhunt

Gamified micro-training (stars, leaderboards) for phishing and human risk. The site is more conventional; the product mechanics are the reference here.

02 · serious business, unserious brand the classic references

These are proven, big-budget versions of the move you're making.

posthog

Product analytics for engineers. It has 140+ hedgehog illustrations and two full-time illustrators, a public handbook, a "you'll hate PostHog if…" section on pricing, and an opinionated voice. Serious typography, unserious everything else.

dropbox brand

The brand guidelines site is itself a playful, interactive experience. Rules you want to play with are the best example of "grounded but not boring" documentation.

mailchimp

Cavendish yellow, loose hand-drawn illustration, and a winking chimp. This is the rebrand that made "quirky but you can run a business on it" mainstream.

arc · the browser company

A browser marketed like a zine: bright colour, hand-feel and a manifesto voice. It feels like a young team making something new, not a vendor.

lemonade

Insurance, the most serious purchase on this list, sold with hot pink, AI chat and plain talk. Worth studying for how trust gets built without looking like a bank.

hot pinkplain language

monzo

A bank with a coral-hot card, lowercase warmth and radically plain copy. The reference for "safe" without the navy blazer.

safe ≠ corporateplain copy

oatly

Not B2B, but the benchmark for lowercase, self-aware, hand-lettered copy that talks to you like a person. Take the voice, not the packaging.

lowercase voicehand-lettered

gumroad

Neo-brutalist: thick black borders, flat pinks and yellows, zero gradients. Payments infrastructure that looks like it was made by humans at a desk.

teenage engineering

Premium hardware with a toy-like, lowercase, engineering-manual aesthetic. It's the proof that "precise" and "fun" can live in the same grid.

lowercaseprecise + playful

03 · teaching, fast bite-sized · hands-on · workshop-shaped

Brands and pages that make learning feel like a sprint rather than a semester.

04 · recently awarded, worth a look Awwwards 2024–2026

Juried winners in adjacent categories: AI, security, operator-led events and reports.

05 · what the good ones share patterns, not prescriptions

One weird owned assetHandwriting (Granola), pixel cat (Mistral), hedgehog (PostHog), llama (Vanta). One thing only you have, used everywhere.
Warm colour in a cold categoryCoral in compliance, lime in AI, orange in LLMs. The category default is navy and purple gradients.
Personality in the wordsCleo, Oatly, Monzo and PostHog let the copy carry the joke while the layout stays calm and legible.
Let people touch itGandalf teaches AI security by letting you break it, and Dropbox's guidelines are playable. Show the hands-on approach instead of claiming it.
Deliberate imperfectionWobbly strokes, visible hand and texture. These are the cues AI output doesn't produce by default.
Candour as trustPublic handbooks, real prices, and "you'll hate us if…". Safe comes from honesty, not from a navy suit.
